Great At Home Business Ideas for Moms

In May of 2016, I was sitting in my living room and I was bored. My house was (mostly) clean, my kids were well loved and entertained and I felt the desire for something more.

I was (am) a full time housewife and stay at home mom and I wanted a job I could do from home. It was that day that the desire to start my own business blossomed and I got to work figuring out what that business would be.

In the last several years, I have researched so many different ways to make money, while still being a stay at home mom.

I have also tried A LOT of those ideas. Some were successful, others not so much.

Today I want to share with you some of the best at home business ideas for women and moms that I have tried, and that actually earned me money.

I will also share some ways where I personally know people who have been successful and made money.

Each of these ideas are definitely possible to turn into a work from home job you can do with kids. They may take some time to get up and running, but it is possible to make a side income (Or full time income) with all of these ideas.

Home Based Business Ideas for Women

Start an Ecommerce Store

I know there are a lot of “gurus” advertising about how to start an e-commerce store and have wild success right off the bat.

Having built an e-commerce business from home, and actually made money doing it, I know it takes some time and effort to build up.

But I truly recommend Alison Prince’s 0-100k course. It wasn’t until I signed up for her course that my little business actually made a profit!

When I signed up for her course my little business was in the negative in terms of money….-$600 to be exact. After just a couple of months my business was making a profit and it just went up from there.

I learned so much from her and she teaches the step by step method to become successful and start making money as quickly as possible. Using her methods I sold over $10,000 of products in just a few months (and have sold well over $25,000 of products).

So if you are interested in starting your own e-commerce business, I highly recommend learning from someone who has done it successfully, and is still learning and selling in the e-commerce world.

Become a Virtual Assistant

There are so many businesses popping up these days. And business owners can’t do it all! That is where a virtual assistant comes in.

I personally know people who have become a virtual assistant using the methods taught by Lauren Golden and her Free Mama Movement.

Virtual Assistants have a lot of time flexibility, and the skills needed for such a job vary so widely. In fact, Lauren has a youtube video giving several ideas about tasks you could offer as a VA–email management, graphic design, schedule managing. Seriously, the list goes on.

Being a Virtual Assistant is a great stay at home mom business opportunity. Your time is flexible to handle client work and be with your kids.

And, again, the best and fastest way to succeed is to learn from someone who has done it!

Design Hacking

Design Hacking is probably something you have not heard of before. But it goes hand in hand with being a Virtual Assistant, as it is an additional skill you can learn and offer to potential clients.

You can also learn this skill and build a business around just design hacking. Essentially, what Design Hacking is, is looking at websites that are already successful, taking the design ideas and elements from those sites and using those ideas to create new websites to help businesses be more successful.

If you have never created a website before–DON’T WORRY and don’t be scared, I hadn’t either when I started doing Design Hacking.

Kathryn Jones, the creator and teacher of Design Hacking, does an amazing job to show you, step by step, how to create these websites that businesses will love (and will pay you to make for them!).

Her course, CF Design School, is all about teaching you the easy way to make these amazing websites AND using this new found skill to build your own business/sell these website designs to businesses.

You do not have to know coding or HTML or any other techy stuff.

Become a Transcriptionist

In this world where so much is video and digital content created by businesses. But these companies still need a written version of their media–you tube videos, podcasts, company meetings, etc.

That is where the work of a transcriptionist comes in. You watch and/or listen to some media files, write down what is said into a formatted document, word for word, and send the written version back.

Transcription is a great way to earn some side income and perfect for when babies are sleeping, for example.

Create and Sell Printables

I love me a good Printable, what about you?

If Printables are your thing, you should check our Michelle Rohr’s course Passive Income with Printables.

She teaches you step by step how to design your own printables AND sell them on Etsy.

She was able to build up her store enough to generate several thousand dollars, per month, with purely passive income! Now that is the way to make money from home!

I loved her course and have been able to make several hundred dollars with her teachings, with more money still coming in.

Start an Etsy Store

Etsy is actually where I got my start. Now, having started and built an Etsy shop I will tell you that “starting an Etsy store” sounds a lot easier than it is.

Don’t get me wrong. I learned SO MUCH from my shop, and continue to learn from it. But there are some fundamental things you will need to learn to be successful on Etsy.

It is more than throwing some items up and hoping they will do well (Which may or may not be what I did to start… just saying..).

But having an Etsy shop is a lot of fun and a great way to build a handmade business. If this is something you would be interested in, I highly recommend looking into Flourish.

Social Media Manager

The world of marketing has changed so much in the last few years and businesses NEED social media in order to truly see success. This is where Social media Managers come in.

At the beginning of 2019, I tried my hand at social media marketing. It was a lot of fun, and I learned so much. I also made $4000 in just a couple months!!

Offer Child Care in your Home

This is a side hustle that is mentioned a lot, but don’t discount it!

If you have little kids at home, and you watch someone else’s child who is about the same age as yours, suddenly you have a built in play date for your little one.

And it doesn’t take a lot to make an impact on your finances. You can easily bring in $100 a week watching just 1-2 kids per day during school hours. That is $400 a month!

What could you do with that money? Probably a lot.

So if you love kids, or have kids at home, consider offering to watch someone else’s child for a while and see how it goes.

Turn a Skill into Money

Do you have an in demand skill that you could turn into some extra income?

My mom taught me to sew when I was 8. As an adult, I still have this skill and people have come to me, asking for help with some sewing project or another.

In the process I have earned several hundred dollars from this skill I started to learn as a child.

Now, I don’t advertise this skill because I don’t want to get flooded with requests. But I could turn it into some extra income if needed.

Bonus Idea–Start a Blog

Ha! Did you think we were going to have a blog post about business ideas and making money from home and not talk about starting a blog?!

I do not talk about blogging, or making money blogging, a lot. But it is a viable option. And the more I have spent learning, the more I realize how possible it is, even in this time when it seems like “every one is blogging”.

If you feel you have something to say, or you have a topic you are passionate about, you might want to consider starting a blog.

Personally, I geek out over finances and budgets. And it was that passion that finally convinced me to do something with it, and here we are.
